Matariki - The Wellington Whale

7/8/2018

On Wednesday 4 July 2018 a rare Southern Right Whale appeared in Wellington Harbour.  He swam, frolicked and breached and entertained Wellingtonians for up to a week.  He caused havoc to the traffic and parking around the bays and disrupted the ferry sailings on many of those days.

Matariki, you bought smiles and joy to so many people and even in bad weather you melted our hearts - unfortunately now it seems you've decided to part.

I have put together a short video using my photos as a reminder of that special day I got to enjoy Matariki playing to the crowds at Miramar Wharf.  Matariki  - hopefully we will meet again soon (possibly on a brighter day).

I must say that this is a huge Southern Right Whale! Those people in Wellington Harbour were so lucky for they got the glance of Matariki. Based on my now knowledge, this one does not appear so much. It is very rare to have a sighting of Southern Right Whale especially in a place where there are lots of people. That's why I am so happy to know that there are people who got the chance to catch them! They are so lucky for they have experienced this!

I would really love to see this with my own eyes as well! This is indeed so beautiful yet scary at the same time since I am not really into water creatures. But of course, even though this one seems so scary for me, I will still make sure that I won't miss any chance that will be given to me just to see this one in person. Anyway, thank you so much for letting us witness such beauty even if this is only through your pictures. You have given me a glimpse of how big the world is which means that I still have lots of thing to experience and see. Thank you and I wish that your works will be recognized.
